Ah introduction of the characters, first by exposing their deep dark personal lives. Love the irony there. It makes the explanation of their "normal" lives that much more interesting later on. Both seemed to have led typical college lives, and both seemed "bored" or "annoyed" at the lack of true satisfaction. They were meant to meet.
